Phillida Gili

I was brought up first in the Berkshire Downs, then in Dorset, the daughter of the wood engraver and designer, Sir Reynolds Stone, and the photographer Janet Stone.

I have worked as a free-lance illustrator and writer ever since graduating from St Martin’s School of Art in 1968. Publishers I have worked for include (among many others) Penguin, Oxford University Press, John Murray, The Stanbrook Abbey Press, Hamish Hamilton, Orchard Books, Doubleday and Boxer Books. I have devised, written and illustrated various pop-up books, cards and advent calendars, and most recently a pop-up Cinderella for Bloomsbury Books. I wrote a short history of pop-ups and paper engineering for The Private Libraries Association. Most of my work has been for children, and I have also worked with children in schools using paper engineering as a way of story-telling.

During the whole of my working life I have also been publishing, with my late husband Jonathan, limited editions under the name of Warren Editions.
